Nap?

It’s no longer a question. And unless there’s an abuse, libraries should encourage it.

I’ve def seen students in various stages of napping (especially now that it’s winter in South Africa and nice and toastie in the library) and have no problem with it.

(unless they snore or make themselves too comfortable i.e. pillows, blankets, night light etc)

  • At Carnegie Mellon University’s Hunt Library, they installed an “Energy Pod” to help students restore some of their often exhausted vitality. The company that makes the pods is called Metro Naps. Very sleek, and very well received by the students.

  • @Sophie and John -thanks for thoughts; always cool to hear from the field.

  • Our security staff have had to start waking up napping students: apparently a female student was molested after she fell asleep in the library.

Prior to that it wasn’t uncommon to see students sleeping under tables. Parts of our library are open all night during the school year, and they would indeed bring pillows and blankets.
