Little Free Library #2099 – Library Steward: Michael Stephens

The Little Free Library Balsam Circle at Spider Lake in Traverse City, Michigan is a neighborhood project spearheaded by Michael Stephens and Erin Henshaw. The library itself was built by Erin Henshaw and Steven Hoggatt and was built to match Stephens’ cottage across the street. It was dedicated for use by our lake community of Balsam Circle and Lakeview Trail on July 21, 2012. In the weeks since its dedication, the library has seen a lot of traffic and impromptu story times have occurred in the adjacent garden. A favorite book is “The Legend of Sleeping Bear” by Kathy-jo Wargin.

The library has a custom stone-faced chimney and a local “Up North” wine cork for a door handle. It includes a guest book and has a stack of bookmarks made by neighborhood children.

Note from Michael: This is one of the coolest things I have ever done relating to libraries. More to follow…

  1. I’d love to see you, Erin, and Steven put the building plans, specs, and instructions online! This is so fantastic, and it has inspired me to consider putting one at the top of my driveway.
