Report on US Visit & Broadband from Warren Cheetham

Warren Cheetham’s  final report and presentation about his 2013 VALA Travel Scholarship to the USA, to investigate libraries and broadband internet, is now publicly available. The report was presented at the VALA Library conference in Melbourne earlier this year. This page has links to the written report and a video of the conference presentation. The page linking to the paper seems to indicate that it’s not available yet, but scroll to the bottom and accept the terms and conditions to access the paper. The video link requires a name and email to register, but it should then play right away. http://www.vala.org.au/vala2014-proceedings/795-vala2014-session-6-cheetham […]

Making mistakes in our daily work: A TTW Conversation between Warren Cheetham and Justin Hoenke

Warren: Hi Justin! I found this weird avant garde art video online that you’re featured in! I didn’t realize you were into that – tell me more! Justin: No, not an art video…I was actually testing out On Air Google+ Hangouts with my co-worker James McNutt. We’re using the On Air Hangouts to record the guest speakers we have for our DEV DEV:<summer of code/> camp at the Chattanooga Public Library. W: So it was just a test? Why put it online? J: Yah, just a test.  We put it online because that’s the whole point of the on air hangout…to record […]

A personal visit to The Urbana Free Library: A TTW Guest Post by Warren Cheetham

Yesterday morning (Tues 17th June 2013) I found myself at the Urbana Free Library, which is the focus of a lot of attention in library land at the moment. I count it as a professional privilege to have spent two hours with some of the most inspirational public library staff I have ever met. Here I offer a few observations and opinions based on my visit to the library. I’m travelling through the USA for the next two weeks on a VALA Travel Scholarship, investigating existing and planned projects where fibre-broadband rollouts affect libraries. The twin cities of Champaign and Urbana in Illinois […]

Presentation: Impact of Learning 2.0 in Australian Libraries with Warren Cheetham

I am very pleased I got to present about the CAVAL research project with Warren Cheetham at the Library 2.011 Conference this week. The hurdles of distance, time and funding for travel fell away as we presented virtually from our offices. For Warren, it was Thursday morning in Townsville, while for me it was early evening Wednesday in northern Indiana. View the recording here: RECORDING

With Warren after the Talk

With Warren after the Talk, originally uploaded by mstephens7. Just one more note about the CAVAL research project. I’ll be working with Townsville Libraries’ Warren Cheetham on this project. I was glad to meet him in Brisbane last year and now we actually get to work together! Our contact at CAVAL is Richard Sayers. We’ve emailed, Skyped and chatted on the phone but we have never met in person! This fall for sure. 🙂

Thanks Warren Newport Public Library!

Staff Development Day at Warren Newport Public Library, Gurnee, Illinois, originally uploaded by mstephens7. Friday I was tickled to spend the day with the staff at Warren Newport Public Library, in Gurnee, Illinois for their Staff In Service. The theme of the day was WNPL 2.0, so I think I was in the right place. I was especially thrilled to customize THL for them, complete with slides that highlighted the cool things they are doing. One surprise was finding a Yelp review I was able to incorporate into the show: http://www.yelp.com/biz/warren-newport-public-library-gurnee I stayed for a nice lunch (complete with […]

With Warren after the Talk

With Warren after the Talk Originally uploaded by mstephens7 One of the highlights of the trip has been meeting Australian librarians who’ve emailed me or commented at TTW. One of the folks I met today in Brisbane was Warren Cheetham, who wrote to TTW back in 2005: http://www.tametheweb.com/2005/02/24/ipod-as-listening-station/

It’s been a decade since the first trip, touring “The Hyperlinked Library” in five cites, and nine years since I was CAVAL Visiting Scholar and spoke at ASLA and QPLA. I am honored to be returning to do the closing keynote for the Asia-Pacific Library & Information Conference and to spend two weeks at the University of Southern Queensland as part of the Eminent Visiting Scholar Scheme program. Special thanks to everyone at ALIA and to Helen Partridge, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) and  Kate Davis at USQ, and […]

Where we live (Part 6) – A TTW Guest Post by Beth Harper

Practice Toodling around in the Denver Art Museum between lunch and work yesterday (I work 4-8pm on Thursdays) I realized – right now, I have time. To slow down, to pay attention, to explore. I always feel under such tremendous pressure to use my time well, and right now, this is using my time well – getting to know my new city, getting rested, spending my time on the bus and train getting caught up on all the reading I haven’t done in the last few years. Thinking and processing. Refilling the well. This is important. I’ll cycle back around to the part […]
