New Little free Library in Traverse City

One of the highlights of the summer was a visit from Little Free Library Co-founder and LFL Executive Director Todd Bol. He stopped in Traverse City on the way back from ALA Annual. We gave him a tour of some of our local LFLs, including our own here at Spider Lake. Here’s Todd and I that day at our library:

I was floored when Todd left me with two LFLs that magically appeared out of his vehicle. He left me with this charge: place the LFLs in the area with stewards that will take care of them! I am happy to report that with the help of Metta Lansdale, director of the Traverse Area District Library, one of the libraries is placed. Thanks Todd, Metta and everyone involved! Below is the press release from Jubilee House where the blue cottage style LFL is located:

A Little Free Library Charter #1104 is posted at 325 Washington Street at Jubilee House, an outreach ministry of Grace Episcopal Church.  The Little Free Library program is a movement to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide. It seeks to build a sense of community by sharing skills, creativity and wisdom across generations through books. The motto is take a book, return a book.

Many hands contributed to the project. The library box was built and donated by inmates of the Goodmates Program at the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.  Jon Patt, an employee of the library volunteered to install the box and laid the stepping stones, a gift from Traverse Outdoor Maintenance. The garden guild of Grace Church contributed the bench and planter. Children attending the summer Play and Pray program at Grace Church donated books.  The community is invited to use the library.

And here is the library itself:

Updated from a previous TTW Post: HOW COOL! A teen who lives next to us at the lake made a video for the Little Free Library Film Festival! Cassidy shot the video on his iPod Touch and used some of our pics from the building of the library. The video features the kids and neighbors who use our Little Free Library (and a shot at the campfire too!) I am really knocked out by his creativity!Vote for Cassidy’s super cool video about the Little Free Library at Spider Lake by liking or pinning it on this page:

Please forgive the shameless plug but I am knocked out by Cassidy’s work on this video! He taught himself iMovie and engaged with the kids in our little neighborhood as actors! Please share the link above with friends and if they like the video, maybe they’ll vote too.

Monessen residents soon will be able to borrow library books – at the laundromat.

Jill Godlewski, children’s director at the Monessen Public Library, is planning to place several portable libraries scattered around town. Godlewski hopes to situate the wooden dispensaries once the weather clears.

“The idea is to get books to people instead of people having to come to the library to get books,” Godlewski said. “We want to make sure there are no barriers to getting a book.

My favorite part? A partnership with the local school!

Monessen school district Superintendent Linda Marcolini is planning for wood shop students at the high school to build sturdier, weather-proof units for outdoor locations like City Park.

“Mr. (David) Gilpin, our shop teacher and students will be making them,” Marcolini said. “They will get done before the end of the school year… our district would do anything for our community and public library.”

What an awesome take on an already awesome project.

PS: Jill Godlewski is not only a fantastic librarian, but she is also my mother in law.
