The rest of the site is currently under construction, but for now you’ll find:

Web 2.0 & Libraries: Best Practices for Social Software (2006) - http://thehyperlinkedlibrary.org/libtechreport1/

Web 2.0 & Libraries: Trends & Technologies (2007) - http://thehyperlinkedlibrary.org/libtechreport2/

Special thanks to my SJSU SLIS grad assistant Patrick Siebold who worked very hard the past few weeks inputting the content. I know the examples from ’06 and ’07 may seem out of date and quaint in some ways, but I’m very proud of the framework we used for the works back then. Conversations, Community, Connections, Collaborations – all those great C words Jenny Levine and I used throughout our early social software roadshows in 2005 & 2006 provide a useful context for looking at Web 2.0. I hope these works are still useful to some of you. Comments are open for adding more to the chapters and I plan on doing some types of updating as time permits.

The site will also serve my course Web sites and other items related to my teaching.

From Central Rappahannock Regional Library comes this outstanding example of library video production that contains a serious, heartfelt message about libraries and the dedication of library workers in troubled times.

Wired writes:

For the record, we love libraries as much as the technological advances which now put libraries in your pocket. They are havens, sanctuaries, community centers and places where helpful people who are almost certainly smarter than you hang out just to help you. : No batteries are required for books need. They don’t need connectivity or special equipment to operate them.

Read More http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/09/librarians-rock-well-anyway-they-disco/#ixzz0zn503oN5

It’s incredibly witty, contains some wonderful dialogue and the background noise in the busy library scenes is a wonderful detail. I applaud the folks that worked so hard on this love letter to library work and serving users in 2010.

Thanks to Lisa Varga, Incoming Executive Director, Virginia Library Association, for sending the Wired link my way.

One weekend staff came in on their own time to film the final stand of the video in a giant domino train throughout the library space as a fitting homage to their service. May the videos now rest in peace. Long live the VHS!

The video was filmed earlier this year in Tea Tree Gully, South Australia, and in the Library here we’re all very proud of our effort – we would love to share it with others around the library world,

Entries for the third annual contest will be accepted for the public library sponsored “two-minute or shorter” my favorite book online contest from January 20 through Feb. 28. The contest is open to all, with prize awards available to young people entering kindergarten through high school (K – 12).

Storytubes won the PLA Polaris Innovation in Technology John Iliff Award in 2009. Alan Harkness, Director of the Piedmont Regional Library System, chaired the PLA award jury. He said that the StoryTubes project was chosen for the prize because it “captured the essence of using technology in an innovative way to tie back into a core business function of public libraries: sharing the joy of reading.”

“The StoryTubes project gave local kids a means to use technology they were interested in to talk about stories. The way that this project brought the community together to vote on the videos the children made was quite original and easily replicated in libraries everywhere.”

Project participants have more than doubled across the nation each year as more young people and educators are discovering the creative magic of matching kids’ love of reading with their interest in technology.

Please visit www.storytubes.info for more information about the contest and to watch educators talk about how Storytubes has positively impacted education in the classroom.
