Is your state library association podcasting? NJLA is!

IT Section Podcasting Booth IT Section Podcasting Booth Originally uploaded by amy_kearns. I’m enjoying the flickr photos of the New Jersey Library Association meeting, especially the one above. Can someone tell us more about what is happening at NJLA? This is a good lesson for those state level library associations or federations to think about incorporating Web 2.0 tools into the conference. It’s time folks… really, it’s passed time… The Cluetrain is departing! It says BE HEARD http://www.flickr.com/photos/akearns72/135091962/

I Second that Emotion!

Jenny welcomes Mary Ghikas to the Biblioblogosphere! And I, too, am just tickled! Cluetrain Manifesto #3 & #4: Conversations among human beings sound human. They are conducted in a human voice. | Whether delivering information, opinions, perspectives, dissenting arguments or humorous asides, the human voice is typically open, natural, uncontrived. Mary Ghikas on the Biblioblogosphere from her first blog post: As I’ve explored the “biblioblogosphere,” I’ve been struck by several things. First has been the vitality and generosity of the professional exchange taking place. I have shamelessly grabbed references to other blogs and web sites, to interesting papers and new […]

ALA 2.0 & A Voice in the Association (Updated!)

A week ago Wednesday I spent three hours with the folks at ALA Headquarters. Jenny was under the weather so I went on without her! (Jenny – you were missed at the big conference table!) I presented Jenny’s modules and my modules of the roadshow, with a slant toward “association” thinking and a what could ALA be doing with the some of the social software tools. This was prep for the upcoming online course I wrote about at TechSource. I just received my ALA membership card (yes I’m a card-carrying, conference going member) and on the back of the card […]

Ten Techie Things for Librarians 2006 (Updated 2)

On January 27th, I spoke at the Panhandle Library Access Network Tech Day. The crowd, facilities and discussion were incredible. We discussed many of these points as well as ways to effectively incorporate and plan for new technologies, such as IM, blogs and wikis. It’s appropriate then to post this list I’ve been working on because I believe these are some things librarians need to be aware of as we move into 2006 and beyond, amid the discussions of Web 2.0, Library 2.0, and the future of library services. Last year’s list is here. These are the things I would […]

Read/Write Library

Luke the Librarian has this to say at The Gordian Knot: To me, Library 2.0 is about crossing that same threshold — from the library as a one-way conversation to the “read-write library”. Luke pulls in the Cluetrain, conversations, the Read/Write web and does a darn fine job expressing his thinking on L2. Thanks Luke! 5 Factors for Library Web Site Redesign

5 Factors for Library Web Site Redesign This week, as part of Chicago Public Library’s Scholars in Residence Program, Stephen, Jenny and I spent time discussing strategies and planning for a public library Web site redeign. I pointed the group we were with to this press release: http://www.prweb.com/releases/2005/9/prweb285788.htm that I linked to a few weeks ago concerning what factors large public libraries face in a redesign. I also presented this brief list: #1 Your web Site is a Cyber-Branch: Your Web site should be viewed as your location in cyberspace, the ___nth branch if you will. It should be staffed […]

10 Things I Learned at Internet Librarian 2005

Finally things have calmed down. Here goes a long overdue summary of what I took home from Monterey. #1 Public Librarians Rule I had high hopes for the track when we got the go ahead from Jane to put it together. I am super-pleased with the feedback I’ve received. (and send more if you haven’t…) There was such energy in the room… so, one thing I learned is the folks that work at PLS really seem to be interested in new technologies and serving their users. Public Librarians rule because they care about their users and their buildings and the […]

Ten Steps to Insure Staff Buy-In for the Technology Projects

A companion to a presentation I’m giving at Internet Librarian 2005. Download the big old 10MB file here! Ten Steps to Insure Staff Buy-In for the Technology Projects “Why are we doing this?” A few months ago the Reference staff at SJCPL trained the librarians who would be using IM at their service desks. Katie, who was doing the particular session I heard about, asked the group: “Why are we doing this training?” “IM is cool” Someone said…”IM is so hot right now,” said another (who may read my blog too much!) “Nope,” Katie said. “We are doing this because […]
