It’s my belief that library users are expecting more from their web browsing experience. I’m not talking social networks, I’m talking interactive web design. These users are used to websites that allow for dynamically changing content (content that may not require a new page to load) and for a feeling of interactivity with the page. Dynamic content shifts on the page, animates, and morphs into something it wasn’t previously. Let’s look at some examples: Jeep: The rectangular information boxes nicely animate in and out upon click of the left or right arrows allowing for new information to nicely slide in […]

I have posts coming for each of the excellent group projects in my LIS768 class. But please take a listen to this remixed take on Anonymous’ comments about Mishawaka Library Banning Social Software. http://yourlibrary.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-04-06T10_40_08-07_00 Just one example of the creativity my class demonstrated. Rikhei Harris offers some outstanding commentary on ITI aligning with SWIFT for CIL: http://llyfrgellydd.info/?p=40 I frequently use Creative Commons licenses for my work, and such, I grant many of the rights outlined above to anyone who can use my works. However, I am very hesitant to grant rights to commercial entities – especially such extensive rights as are outlined above. I granted Information Today, Inc. the rights to distribute papers, presentation slides, and recordings of the panel on which I will be speaking. The difference, however, is that Information Today was very transparent in the agreement about how these items […]
I’m recovering from a great weekend finishing up LIS768 in Minnesota – more projects will be posted soon — but now I am heading to the airport and to Computers in Libraries. I can already tell from the Flickring etc that Gaming and Gadgets was the place to be last night…sorry I missed. Must be my devious plan to avoid the DDR pad… I have two left feet! If you are attending my talk with Michael Casey, please say hi.

My Web friend from France Laurent shared this plugin with me for WordPress: http://imthi.com/wp-pda WordPress PDA plugin enables the wordpress blog viewable for PDA and iPhone browsers. It is really simple plugin which detects the browser agent and loads a simple theme on fly. The plugin comes with a theme folder which acts like normal theme with all the functionality of wordpress theme. The image above illustrates how TTW looks on my phone. I don’t know how I feel about it – it loads quickly, but one of the best things about Safari on iPhone is how it displays the […]

There’s always some great content at the School Library Journal Web site. This video by Jeffrey Hastings, exploring the ASUS Eee PC 701 4G sub-notebook, is an extension of his published review. It expands visually on the review in a fun and informative manner. The possibilities for using video in this manner excite me: school and other librarians get even more information for decision making than just the printed review, the link can be shared (and blogged) easily, and the video format (music, shots, script) is a perfect prototype for doing your own reviews.
