Hey Libraries – Why are you still losing good employees?

Remember this? A TTW reader just sent this: http://newsletter.logoworks.com/index.php/top-ten-reasons-why-people-quit-their-jobs/07/31/2006/ Top Ten Reasons Why People Quit Their Jobs Includes: Management promotes someone who lacks training and/or necessary experience to supervisor, alienating staff and driving away good employees. Management doesn’t allow the rank and file to make decisions or allow them pride of ownership. A visitor to my website E-mailed me a message that said, “Forget about the “professional” decisions—how about when you can’t even select the company’s holiday card without the President rejecting it for one of his own taste?” I can’t help think of the Teen Librarians at ImaginOn at […]

Ten Rules for the New Librarians

I owe a mountain of inspiration to Karen Schneider for this one! I’m working on the syllabus for my section of LIS701: Introduction to Library and Information Science for this Fall at Dominican. We’re using Rubin’s Foundations of Library and Information Science from Neal-Schuman and I’m adding a reading of The Cluetrain Manifesto as well. We’ll have articles and blog posts to react to and discuss. Putting this together, I’m reminding of a question I had last semester during one of our discussions of current library jobs and those 2.0 job descriptions. “What do we need to pay attention to?” […]

Tech Planning and Implementation Job at PALINET

http://www.palinet.org/about/joblistings/seniortechconsultant.htm Not specifically a 2.0 job, but it does requiere some open source and coding know-how: “Ideal candidate must have at least 4 years experience in technology planning, consulting/training, and implementation; experience with Open Source software and applications, various computing platforms and networking protocols; knowledge of Web development tools and scripting…”

And the librarians shall lead them….

From the NOLA Times Picayune, via my friend and colleague Linda who attended the conference: http://www.nola.com/rose/t-p/index.ssf?/base/living-0/115138792210710.xml&coll=1 A friend of mine passed on to me a story from the Windsor Court Hotel, where, one night, a group of drunken librarians raced up and down the hallways in a juvenile thrall in the wee hours of the morning, raising a holy ruckus. I don’t mean to read too much into this event, but it’s a sign that New Orleans is ready to be, once again, New Orleans when drunken librarians in relax-fit jeans and plaid shirts cavort in the halls of fancy […]

Reinvention – Shifted Style!!!

http://www.theshiftedlibrarian.com/archives/2006/06/20/jenny_and_alas_excellent_adventure.html Congratulations to Jenny Levine on her new job at the American Library Association!! What an incredible thing: Jenny quotes the job description: “Knowledge of 2.0 technologies and concepts. Ability to work in a complex organizational environment. Strong communication ability (written and verbal). Comfort with rapid prototyping….” Who would have thought just 8 or so months ago when the discussions of social tools and L2 were ramping up that by Summer 2006 ALA would be advertising for someone to utilize 2.0 technologies and work in an environment of rapid prototyping? And who would have guessed that one of the most […]

Reinvention Yet Again! Congratulations Michael Casey

This little fact snuck it’s way this week onto Michael Casey’s About Page at Library Crunch: He’s also the Division Director of Technology Services for the Gwinnett County Public Library. WoooHoo! Congrats to Michael for moving up from Branch Manager to Division Director of Technology! I have been knocked out by the caliber of the posts at Library Crunch since last fall, Michael’s work opening the new branch at Gwinnett and his thoughts on technology planning, creating new services and user-centric libraries. What a perfect position to move into! I am also happy to report Michael and I will be […]

Gwinnett County PL Board Fires Director, Patrons Enraged

Via Michael Casey’s photostream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/michaelcasey/166106405 Gwinnett library board fires director By DUANE D. STANFORD The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 06/13/06 The Gwinnett County Library Board fired its executive director of 15 years Monday night, enraging a crowd of patrons who wanted her to keep her job. Sparking cries of “Incompetent!” and “Fire the Board!” from the audience, three of the library board’s five members voted to oust director Jo Ann Pinder without cause. The panel’s majority also used a parliamentary procedure to block the board’s only dissenting member, Brett Taylor, from speaking on the motion. Phyllis Oxendine, who sponsored the […]
