So nice to see this video conversation featuring Jenny Levine as another entry in ACPL’s ongoing “Conversation” series. Take a look for some insightful commentary about library content and reaching our users. My video (taped in December 2007) is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzBC8q_hTHY

Dr Michael Stephens delivered the Dr Laurel Anne Clyde Memorial Keynote Address at the ASLA XXI Biennial Conference, held in Perth, Western Australia, from 29 September to 2 October 2009. Reprinted with permission from the Australian School Library Association Inc. (ASLA) Access 2010 24(1): 5. The evolving Web is an open and social place. The Web has changed everything. Its impact on every facet of our lives — home, work and school — would be difficult to measure but the ‘always on, always available’ Internet is certainly a game changer. Can you recall the first time you realised that the […]
A most enjoyable case study of using Twitter in a larger class environment to foster conversation/discussion.
Check-ins, badges, and becoming mayor have nothing to do with libraries and everything to do with the geolocation game foursquare…. well it did until some of the librarians here at Darien began hijacking our own venue (Darien Library). We began checking in every time we came into work, closely monitoring who among us was crowned Mayor of Darien Library. Possibly making snide comments to our new ruler – of course in good fun. Then it dawned on us: Why are we checking in all the time when we could offer up this service to our users? We began looking a […]

http://www.swissarmylibrarian.net/2010/02/23/redbox-rights-and-wrongs Brian Herzog writes: I had heard of libraries using both Redbox and Netflix, but never really gave it too much though. So I was kind of surprised at my response to my director: Maybe this is just a reaction based on the kind of day this has been, but I have mostly negative feelings about this. Based on http://tametheweb.com/2009/07/01/red-box-rentals-at-princeton-public-library/ is seems any money we get is minimal, and I’m always reluctant to give businesses a green light to target library patrons. If we did put one of these in, I sincerely hope it wouldn’t mean we’d be buying fewer […]
There’s lots of talk about where we are headed these days. What is our future? Will we go the way of the dinosaur and suburban mall? Seth Godin seems to think that we’re doomed while Toby Greenwalt and an army of librarians seem to think otherwise. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that the future of the public library is right in front of us. And boy, does it look wonderful. Teens at the Graphic Novel and Manga Club, Cape May County Library We need to look no further than to the teens that are using […]
