Ten Tech Trends for Librarians 2007

I wanted this post to be out on the day I spoke at the Ontario Library Association with Amanda Etches-Johnson and John Blyberg at the OLITA Top Tech Trends panel, but my dissertation, teaching and life intervene. Each year about this time, TTW looks at “Ten Techie Things for Librarians.” You’ll find 2006 and 2005 in the archives. So here’s this year’s list, with a new name: “Trends” instead of “Things.” Sure it puts a finer point on it but it also recognizes the changes in my thinking about the essential duties of librarians: Learn to Learn Adapt to Change […]

John Blyberg on his Trends: “Lubricate the wheels of communication in your library via these new tools.” “Openness is the new trend..it’s an open world…are you unable or unwilling to adapt? Sharing content, thoughts and ideas should be the norm.” “I am heartened by the conversations taking place online about vendors, etc.”

Another Learning 2.0 Initiative: Palos Verdes Library District

Rosario writes: Take a look at the prizes that are up for grabs for the staff of the Palos Verdes Library District who complete their modified version of 23 things. You can view the available goodies at the site. This is another example of a library doing good things on a small IT budget. http://www.pvldlearning.blogspot.com/ A Wii! iPods!! Woohoo… The library ties the program to it’s mission and vison. Explore some of the new technologies that are reshaping how people use the Internet to access information and interact with one another. Think about how these new technologies could be used […]

Technology Made Simple

Technology Made Simple Originally uploaded by mstephens7. I just received my copy and have only started the first chapter but KUDOOS to Bolan and Cullin for a useful, straightforward technology guide that includes bits about 21st Century library statistics and the value of training. Aimed at medium and small libraries, the book and companion Web site at (get ready for a long ALA URL folks) http://www.ala.org/ala/ourassociation/publishing/alaeditions/webextras/technologymadesimple/technologymadesimple.htm are most useful, especially at combining classic IT stuff with a dash of 2.0 goodness. Disclaimer: I provided the authors with documents and information about IT at SJCPL during their writing process and met […]

iPods & Training for Staff

Rob Coers, my Dutch partner for presentations at Internet Librarian International, just posted about iPod training he recently completed: http://www.robcoers.nl/weblog-artikelen/bibliotheek-spijkenisse-en-ipod-nano.html He translated the post as well: In september 2007 the Spijkenisse Public Library in The Netherlands won the 4th IFLA International Marketing Award with their campaign “We miss you”. Library director Huub Leenen awarded his staff (21 people) with a iPod Nano. I had the honour to do a hands on training to help the staff on the way. Altough usage is very easy, managing your music on iTunes is sometimes a pain. Specially for those who are not used […]

John Blyberg Creates the SOPAC for aadl.org

http://www.blyberg.net/2007/01/21/aadlorg-goes-social/ Blyberg works his code magic on his catalog, Drupal and improves the social aspects of their Innovative Interfaces Inc catalog: So what is the SOPAC? It’s basically a set of social networking tools integrated into the AADL catalog. It gives users the ability to rate, review, comment-on, and tag items. The concept is nothing new, but the nature of our systems do not yield readily to this kind of retrofitting–something I plan to really start tackling in earnest, but that’s a topic for another post. If you’re wondering (and didn’t know already), AADL’s automation system is III which recently […]

Schneider on Planning & IT

For some tips and strategies on dealing with librarians, IT and this 2.0 world, don’t miss Karen Schneider’s most wonderful post at TechSource “IT & Sympathy.” http://www.techsource.ala.org/blog/2007/01/it-and-sympathy.html First, if they haven’t told you what they’re up to, sit down with your IT people and ask what their schedule is, and where your needs for new stuff fit in. It would be wise for IT to do this proactively, but they may not think this way, and you can help them get there. You may find out that IT has some pretty important stuff on the docket, pretty far down Maslow’s […]

NetFlix & Video Downloads

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/netflix/hands-on-the-netflix-download-video-service-thumbs-up-229533.php Fascinating “hands on” report of the new NetFlix video download service. Sadly, it’s not for Macs yet but I’m glad to be reading about it. I’m fascinated to see how all these services — NetFlix, amazon, iTunes — will change the AV area of many public libraries over the next few years.
