Coming back from Minneapolis last night, I fell into conversation with a couple waiting to board our plane about the red carpet and roped aisles United Airlines implemented awhile back for 1K and super-duper-executive-mileage types. The lady remarked how silly it seemed and the gentleman said: “How did they ever explain THAT in a meeting.” EXACTLY what I was thinking. It’s such a strange thing to route some folks one way (across a red carpet) and all the rest of us the other way. When I got back, I searched a bit and found this: United’s Red Carpet at Pragmatic […]
I think Peter Bromberg can read my mind, all the way from New Jersey. I’ve spent a lot of time the past few days updating and expanding my presentation for the impending trip to Australia. Peter blogs a wonderful clearinghouse of links for making effective presentations. http://librarygarden.blogspot.com/2008/02/talk-good-giving-effective.html My favorite: http://presentationzen.blogs.com And like Aaron, I broke up with Keynote’s standard gradient after a long love affair.
I can’t believe in just two weeks we leave for my speaking gigs in Australia. I’ve been prepping, reading up on places to visit, and getting a grip on the itinerary. If you are attending any of the talks, please say hello! Two more talks have been added: an afternoon with the Macquarie University library staff on February 26th and “Best Practices for Social Software in Libraries” in Melbourne, Thursday February 28th, 2008 in the afternoon. Thanks to CAVAL for inviting me and putting together such an incredible trip. http://training.caval.edu.au/pdt/show_course.php?CID=285 Dates: Sydney – Macquarie University Tuesday February 26th, […]

Please join me in wishing Jenny Levine a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Jenny has done so much to help shift the profession and more recently our association that I think she deserves a big round of applause and “thanks you’s” — and one way of doing that is to post your own Flickr shot tagged “happybirthdayshifted.” 🙂 Happy day to you my friend!

Dear South Bend Tribune: I received your letter today asking for more information as to why I canceled my subscription last week. Your letter included a brief questionnaire asking why I stopped the paper and how the customer service was when I called to cancel. Yes, I called to cancel, because I couldn’t find a way to do so online. You might want to make that an option. I canceled not only because the papers were piling up week to week and sometimes went right into the recycling bin, but also because I realized I was reading only […]
http://liblime.com/news-items/press-releases/nicole-c-engard-joins-liblime/ “Nicole’s passion for open source is inspiring,” says Joshua Ferraro, CEO of LibLime. “We’re excited to have Nicole fill this critical role of Open Source Evangelist, increasing awareness and facilitating education about open source in both the physical and virtual library communities.” “I honestly believe the future of libraries is in open source,” says Nicole. “Libraries are at a pivotal point – things are changing rapidly around them – among them the traditional software and service models. Open Source software and the companies that support these packages allow libraries a freedom that they haven’t had in years. It is […]
