Thanks MAME 2010

Thanks to everyone who attended the Michigan Association of Media in Education Conference this week in Dearborn, Michigan. This was my first in-person talk since my canine accident. Everyone was so helpful and accommodating! I enjoyed talking with the school librarians from all over the state. Thanks Geneva Public Library!

I had scheduled a talk at Geneva Public Library’s Staff Institute Day months ago – and the “Cooper Incident” changed everything. We were able to work out a good plan: I spoke to the group today for an hour via Skype about some library trends. We showed off Skype as a technology, I got to see the group, they got to see me and Cooper made his presence known with some barks. Thanks to all! New Slide: Techno-hesitation

New Slide: Techno-hesitation, originally uploaded by mstephens7. From my VAPLD talk: If we keep saying “Let’s not adopt technology X because it will soon be out of date,” we’re missing the opportunity for ongoing learning and innovation in a more experimentally-based organization. If we wait for the next big thing continually, stagnation follows.

New Slide: Techno-banality

New Slide: Techno-banality, originally uploaded by mstephens7. From my VAPLD talk: We do not need to dumb down our services or our technology! I’ve heard Stephen Abram say this many times: “No dumb computers!” The same can be said for any technology or technology-based service we offer in libraries. Fully loaded. Fully equipped. A full service experience is what can separate us from other providers of information and “third place” locales.
