Are you wrestling with Flickr at your library? Did recent scare tactics by anonymous emailers put your admin into a tizzy? Save or print this..and pass it on! From NEKLS Tech Day August 10, 2006, by Mickey Coalwell (mcoalwell (at) nekls.org) who gave me permission to post it here. He and Joshua Neff did a great program on Flickr education for a standing room only crowd. This would be a great thing to do at your next staff meeting or staff lunch time learning session. Thanks Mickey. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ 16 Ways To Use flickr @ Your Library 1. Publicize EVENTS at […]

http://davidwarlick.com/2cents/2006/09/16/teaching-responsibility-use-of-social-technology/ Via David Warlick: First of all, this gets my vote for the best education acronym of the decade — TRUST. The guys at EdTechTalk have created a web site/community site designed to give us a play to offer alternatives to the DOPA law. Here’s a quote from the About Us page. Social Technology (or social networking) is changing many aspects of society and has tremendous potential in education, both inside and outside of the classroom. This site is designed as a resource for educators interested in using social technology, but concerned about how to do so appropriately and address […]
Phil Bradley reports at search Engine Watch: Hitwise is reporting that Flickr is the #1 photography site in the UK. This isn’t really a surprise at all – what’s more suprising is that it’s taken a while to get there, and how it’s got there. Flickr’s UK market share has increased 39%, Photobucket’s share decreased by 17% and Webshot’s remained flat. This is apparently due good SEO and searches for soft porn using the brand name and various terms you can work out for yourself. In some respects this is worthy of nothing more than a wry smile and shrug […]

Jenny blogs about our travels here. Last week, I joined Jenny Levine for a trip to Holland and the Ticer Digital Libraries à la Carte: New Choices for the Future program. We taught a day-long hands on workshop. Jenny covered blogs and RSS in the am and I took the participants through IM in the afternoon. I tried something a bit different this time. Taking a cue from our Web 2.0 discussions, Learning 2.0 initiatives, and such, I offered the group what I called an “immersive, experiential and playful” exercise in using IM and thinking about IM in libraries. I […]

Via Deborah Hotchkiss, SC State Library: http://darmano.typepad.com/logic_emotion/2006/07/visualizing_the.html The Connectors, Mavens, and Salesmen help fuel the growth of the Social Media Network (shown behind). Each type of individual possesses a complimentary quality that when combined, creates an infectious momentum which spreads rapidly. From wikipedia: * Connectors: Those with wide social circles. They are the “hubs” of the human social network and responsible for the small world phenomenon. * Mavens are knowledgeable people. While most consumers wouldn’t know if a product were priced above the market rate by, say, 10 percent, mavens would. Bloggers who detect false claims in the media could […]
http://blogaboutlibraries.com/2006/08/use-what-they-use-now.html why in the world doesn’t every library with an internet connection offer IM Reference? This includes my own library where I have introduced the concept to my staff on a couple occasions, but where we have still not taken steps to get it going. My sense is that some of them just are not ready to make this leap. Maybe it’s my fault for not pushing my people harder, hoping instead that one day someone will come to me with the same idea I had two years ago. However, if that doesn’t happen soon, I can’t see how we […]
So…are folks at Sony really getting the “This is where we live” Web 2.0 vibe or what? http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,71559-0.html Hoping to tap into the growth of wireless networks across college campuses, other public spaces and within homes, Sony is introducing a new pocket-sized gadget for instant messaging and other internet-based communications. The Sony mylo, slated for availability in September at a retail price of about $350, is a first-of-its-kind product that uses Wi-Fi networks, analysts say. It is not a cellular phone and thus doesn’t carry monthly service fees. And though it could handle web-based e-mail services, it doesn’t support corporate […]
