More importantly, I’m using it as an opportunity to play with how longer-than-blog texts can be represented online. Nice to have the full text of his outstanding LTR out on the Web and open. Thanks Casey! I need to look into getting my two volumes out.

http://hloy.edublogs.org/2008/08/17/benefits-of-elearning/ Nice post by Heather about using Twitter to tap into the knowledge of her group. One of our assignments was to Google the benefits of eLearning and share our findings with the class. Of course, I have to be different and I was curious to see what members of my PLN thought benefits of eLearning were in relation to their experiences. So, I used Twitter to pole my network and asked: “I’m taking an online course & we’re to gather 3 benefits of eLearning. We’re to use Google, but I figure asking you guys is more practical. Benefits from […]
http://ulatmac.wordpress.com/2008/08/23/apple-computers-coming-soon/ This September, McMaster Libraries will be introducing Apple computers in the public areas in both Thode and Mills Libraries. Come September, you’ll find a sea of brand new machines, including iMacs, Mac Pros and Apple laptops. Don’t worry if you’re not familiar with the Apple operating system. All of these stations will be dual boot, which means you’ll be able to start them up and run either the Apple or Windows operating system. The integration of Apple computers at the libraries allows for greater flexibility and a wider range of software choices. In addition, it gives library users a […]
http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/08/23/amazon-confirms-student-version-of-kindle/ Amazon confirmed our speculation that they are planning to target colleges and universities with a new version of the Kindle, reports the Seattle PI. Textbooks are a $5.5 billion annual market, and most publishers now offer electronic versions of their textbooks. McGraw-Hill Education, for example, publishes 95% of their books electronically as well as in print. But there is no compelling device to read them on. The new Kindle will likely be a large screen version of the original, which is much better suited for textbooks. I’m interested in this but in my classes, we use a lot of articles and online resources. I wonder […]
http://www.lifehack.org/articles/communication/9-tips-to-get-the-most-out-of-social-media.html Some of my favorites: 4. Integrity Don’t be phony! Be yourself — it’s what your social network friends added you for. There are, of course, many ways to “game” just about every social media system, to get more diggs, to appear to have more followers, to get your posts Stumbled, and so on. But in the end, it’s an empty gain — people who follow you because you appear to be something you’re not will quickly un-follow you, people who end up at your site because you managed to get more votes on a post than you deserve will leave without reading, […]

What story is the Grafton Library telling about its users by forwarding two overdue books to the police? How long will the library be known as the one that arrested the lady for two books? http://www.wisn.com/news/17258567/detail.html http://lisnews.org/woman_cuffed_booked_not_paying_library_fines
by: Robin Hastings Information Technology Manager at the Missouri River Regional Library in Jefferson City, Missouri This all started because the employees at the library at which I work, the Missouri River Regional Library, were complaining about all the spam in their email. As the Information Technology Manager, part of my job is managing the email server we had – which used to be a server in our server room running Exchange 2003 with Outlook Web Access enabled, so people could use both Outlook and web-based email, whichever they chose. Trying to keep spam out of an Exchange server is difficult […]
Amanda Clay Powers writes: i’m following 51 people on twitter. today one of them “tweeted” that it was shawerma wednesday at shaherazad, our local mediterrenean restaurant. i love shawerma wednesday, but i’d forgotten all about it. when i signed up for twitter it was an experiment. i looked for everyone at msu and in starkville–there weren’t many–and “followed” all of them. and then they “followed” me. i started getting updates about when exams were happening (and what people were doing to de-stress!). then mpbonline and the clarion ledger started following me. mississippi public broadcasting is doing some pretty cool things, it turns out. then i […]
