In the morning workshop yesterday, I mentioned what was happening in the public library realm with gaming tournaments and what university libraries may expect from gamers as students. At lunch, Scott Brandt lead a field trip down to the Student Union to check it out. Scott and Brook, another Purdue librarian, grabbed the chance to stretch their legs! Then, the students offered to show us how it’s done! One fellow jumped up and wowed us — dancing to “It’s Raining Men!” http://www.flickr.com/photos/michaelsphotos/sets/436942/ Lesson: there’s a lot of talk about gaming…a first step might be to check it out for yourself […]

Here’s where we will be: (there are frogs all over town too!)
I’m in Kokomo, IN for part 3 of the 3 session series of workshops I have been presenting with Sharon and Dan Wiseman. Today, I present a version of my “Optimizing Tech” talk to 25 Indiana librarians, followed by group practice planning for technology! Here’s the updated PPT as a PDF: http://www.tametheweb.com/presentations/workshop3.pdf This kicks off a twelve day stetch of travel for workshops and scholl that I will document here. Jessamyn inspired me with her flickr shots of her lodgings and her workshops… After the session today, I zip across Indiana to west lafayette to meet up with the one […]
I’ll be using this link in my talk tomorrow during “Reinventing Libraries Part 3” http://www.oclc.org/news/publications/newsletters/oclc/2005/267/default.htm And this one too: http://www.flickr.com/photos/shifted/sets/378371/ (Thanks Jenny!)
I was just thinking this am whilst getting ready for work that I am a busy guy the next 2 weeks: workshops in Indiana, Connecticut and school in Texas. On the way to work, a good friend who works with me called to say one our SJCPL employees had died suddenly Monday night. It’s like a blow to the stomach, friends. It makes me realize how fragile everything is and how we shouldn’t get so caught up in buzz buzz business and “drama” in our workplaces. I just “shot the breeze” yesterday afternoon with this employee..and now he is gone. […]

Via Frances, our SJCPL Staff Devlopment Librarian: http://librarymarketing.blogspot.com/2005/06/sandwich-with-side-of-knowledge.html This, my friends, is OUTREACH. This makes the librarian visible..the library visible…and provides a valuable service. I’d ponder this for sure if I was planning outreach services. From http://fulton.blogspot.com/ “On Saturday, June 4, Daveman will be at Panera Bread in Clay on Route 31 from 8:00 – 10:00 AM. Using their wireless network and my tablet PC, I’ll be answering any and all questions faster than you can spell focaccia. I can show you how to find articles from Consumer Reports and hundreds of other magazines for free. Enter the raffle for […]
Here’s a great list in response to my own: http://librarianinblack.typepad.com/librarianinblack/2005/05/ten_alternative.html Rock On Librarian in Black – these are effective steps EVERY LIBRARY should be taking!
Via an email from Jessamyn while I am unplugged and waiting for the internet install at the cottage: http://blog.stayfreemagazine.org/2005/05/remixing_moma.html Could folks record audio tours of libraries? I think so!
I begin six weeks leave of absence today from SJCPL! Wowza! I am hitting the road for ten days in Traverse City this afternoon…for some much needed unpluggedness and some prep time for a very busy stint in June: Reinventing Libraries workshop, workshops with the Purdue Library (blogs), the Darien, Connecticut Public Library (blogs & IM), the start of the summer session at UNT and ALA! I’ll be blogging after the Memoiall Day weekend! Enjoy the Weekend! Unplug! Best to you all
