Some big news. Magazines are now included in Google Book Search: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/12/search-and-find-magazines-on-google.html Today, we’re announcing an initiative to help bring more magazine archives and current magazines online, partnering with publishers to begin digitizing millions of articles from titles as diverse as New York Magazine, Popular Mechanics, and Ebony. Are you a baseball history fanatic? Try a search for [hank aaron pursuing babe ruth’s record] on Google Book Search. You’ll find a link to a 1973 Ebony article about Hank Aaron, written as he closed in on Babe Ruth’s original record for career home runs. You can read the article in full color and in its original context, […]

Aaron reports on his new job: http://www.walkingpaper.org/1029 I’m super excited to let interested parties know that I’m now the Digital Initiatives Librarian for the District of Columbia Public Library. Not quite sure what a Digital Initiatives Librarian does? Well, it is vague on purpose but I can tell you that I’m going to be doing website visioning, usability testing, web presence development and planning all sorts of fun projects. Much of this stuff is going to fall under a subdivision of the DCPL Information Technology Services department that we’re calling DCPL Labs (still in beta so expect to find some lorem ipsum). I am especially interested […]
http://twitter.com/zappos/status/1052162305 I wonder how many directors and managers will be staffing library service desks and circulation points for busy Holiday times? I hope many will.
At the Skokie Public Library Twitter has become a nimble, extremely quick, and easy to use internal communication device. A small group of Skokie employees use Twitter to bounce ideas off one another, solve simple issues such as “how do I check something out to missing,” and even answer reference questions. What makes me excited about this use of Twitter? First it came about totally on its own, nobody planned to use Twitter as a means of communicating. Second is the mass effect of Twitter. I can send a question to many and not have to worry about one particular […]

Brains, originally uploaded by mstephens7. Despite my nasty cold, my last talk of 2008 was wonderful. I appreciate all the kindness (a care package of cold medicine) from Kelley at ACLA and the warm reception at my talk. The slides are here.
Out in the Cold, originally uploaded by Fox River Grove Memorial Library. Liz Delzell, Youth Services Assistant, Fox River Grove Memorial Library in Fox River Grove, IL, writes: I just wanted to share this picture of some of the members of our BRAND NEW teen advisory board. We have a lovely little library serving about 4500 residents in a small northern suburb of Chicago, and while we see lots and lots of kids, adults, and seniors, we don’t seem to draw in area teens. We hope the members of this board will be able to give us some insight into […]

An interview with Edward Byrne, Senior Librarian Web Services, Dublin City Libraries: EB: The end product was rolled out to all branch libraries in January 2008, and can be deemed a success in that it successfully meets the need to provide a single point of access to diverse resources for our users, and it does so in a time- and labor-saving fashion. Cost can be calculated in terms of staff time only (which after the initial delivery can be calculated in terms of minutes rather than hours per week), as there is no other financial outlay involved. Intervention by […]
