Challenges & Traits for 21st Century Libraries/Librarians

Last night in LIS701: Introduction to Library and Information Science, we discussed our five “context” books. Last semester we did this too. The books read this time were: Anderson, C. (2006). The Long Tail Beck, J., & Wade, M. (2004). Got Game: Ehrenreich, B. (2001). Nickel and Dimed Pink, D. (2005). A whole New Mind Weinberger, D. (2007). Everything is Miscellaneous We debriefed after two rounds of discussion and the class offered these challenges and traits: (Book titles are noted where applicable) Challenges for 21st Century Libraries • ability to meet niche markets that affect so much information (LT) • […]

Reducing the Noise

I really enjoy student blogging – especially LIS students. From a blog by a Knowledge Management grad student comes this: http://kmiscommunication.wordpress.com/2007/10/18/crap-happens/ I find it interesting that after I write this post, I’m going to tag it the wordpress way, so hopefully someone else can pull my thoughts out of cyberspace. Thank You Erik, Jaap & Geert!

I must thank the fellows of the LBI Shanachie Tour! Jaap, Erik and their colleague Geert came to campus at 1am on Saturday morning and – God Bless our Campus Security – they camped in our parking lot! Saturday morning found them awake and ready to speak to my LIS753 class. Afterward, they invited any interested students to play a round of What’s the Future of Libraries? with a spinning bottle. The cameras and videocams were grabbing every second: http://www.flickr.com/photos/14492454@N03/sets/72157602596452548/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/michaelsphotos/sets/72157602580815945/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/shifted/sets/72157602568017465/ I was impressed with the students who participated and summed their feelings about where libraries are headed. The […]
