IM Office Hours – No Class Tonight Originally uploaded by mstephens7. Physical, real time class is cancelled because it is NASTY here in Chicago but the class can still meet with me via IM and work on the Collection Development module online at Blackboard. To everyone in the path of the winter storm..stay safe and warm!
That’s a discussion question I use in LIS701. Here’s one group’s take: Here is our revision of Ranganathan’s Five Laws 1. Collections are for use. 2. Every collection its user. 3. Every user his collection. 4. Save time & energy of user. 5. The library is a growing organism. We based our revision off of his philosophy of democracy and service and on “honoring the past while creating for the future.” We enjoyed the discussion. Thanks! I did too. What do you all think?
Elmhurst College student Kyle Jones riffs on the fact I have office hours at Corner Bakery in downtown Chicago on Mondays and how students might find a special place to do their required reading, including the library. http://www.thecorkboard.org/blog/?p=40 I would love for my students to try different reading environments and explore the atmospheres. Take your daunting novel to a Caribou Coffee (where I am currently at, writing this post), grab a cup of joe, and find your own little corner. Or, develop a spot in the local public library you can call your own (I call dibs on the children’s […]
Tuesday I spoke to a class at Elmhurst College about Web 2.0, libraries and future trends. The class, Great Chicago Libraries, is a course offered to Elmhurst College Honors Program students and is taught by Donna Goodwyn, Associate Librarian, Susan Swords Steffen, Library Director, and Peg Cook Reference/Instruction Librarian. The highlight of the course is multiple library visits. Each visit was blogged and YouTubed as well. Take a look at: http://www.greatchicagolibraries.blogspot.com/ and get a load of this list of “Library Visit Blogs:” Bensenville Public Library Brookfield Zoo Library Carol Stream Public Library Des Plaines Public Library Galter Health Sciences Library […]
A Dominican student writes: I was sent this information: The journal Libri has a special award for student created papers. See http://www.librijournal.org/award.html. The prize is $500 plus a subscription to Libri plus publication of your paper in Libri. Guidelines for authors can be found at http://www.librijournal.org/authorinst.html. Deadline for the contest is the end of May 2007. I had a discussion with someone about how many wonderful writers we know at Dominican. Grad school students should be encouraged to publish, especially those interested in working in academic libraries. Thanks for wanting to help students publish! I agree. I was so impressed […]
Here’s my updated group project assignment for LIS753 this semester. Which team would you like to be on? 🙂 LIS753 Internet Fundamentals and Design Stephens Team Projects Web Technologies – Creating a Service For this assignment, the class becomes the library emerging technology group. I had some remarkable papers last semester. Thoughtful, well-researched, concise and full of critical assessments of libraries past, present and future. Here are some venues for students to publish their work: Library Student Journal: http://informatics.buffalo.edu/org/lsj/index.php Post Tracks: http://www.webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=10980 Are there others?
I like the heart Originally uploaded by mstephens7. Could we say that personalized tastemaker-style services encourage people’s hearts? I know comment conversations can for sure. Something about this graphic really touched me after an evening of lecture and discussion with my incredible LIS701 class.
This weekend in my LIS753 class we were able to visit second Life and the Second Life Information Island/Library 2.0. I logged in and walked around while the class watched on the big screen. We encountered some folks in a training session, a couple of librarians and visitors to the island. It was fascinating. The discussion that followed was lively. I hope to do more with SL in future classes. Understanding the virtual experiences that some folks are seeking out and the worlds they are building are important parts of the information landscape. Here’s an article as well via Dr. […]
