This is Not a Study Area Originally uploaded by mstephens7 What if I had my laptop, iPhone with headset, and a sudden motivation to write the introduction to my term paper? And I sat THERE! How would anyone know if I was studying?

A post about rules from Library Yarns: So, I was at work today, once again enforcing rules that I don’t agree with. Three people are working in a conference room on their laptop. They need to print. They ask if they can use one of our patron computers and attach their thumb drive. No problem so far. Turns out that they don’t have a library card and we have a strictly enforced rule that you cannot, no way, no how use our computers without one. I try to use mental telepathy to encourage them to tell me they are from […]
$.50 per 15min for Internet access Originally uploaded by Travelin’ Librarian. Read the fine print. I am really wondering what has prompted this library to offer access for .50 for 15 minutes with no CD, USB or “Excel, Adobe…” etc. Follow the other links as well. Can someone fill me in? I’ll be using this in class when we discuss access and “library as place.”

At Minnesota State University Moorhead, collection-management librarian Larry Schwartz finds himself explaining to students that books are shelved by call numbers. “There’s concern in Libraryland about how we should serve these people who grew up with computers,” he says. Matthew Kessler, a student I know at Western Michigan University, proudly avoids the school library. Given all the books and magazines it houses, “that place is a firetrap. I don’t go […]

Steve, Camille and the green screen. Originally uploaded by Kankakee Public Library. Who knew that libraries might want to have a green screen to make snazzy videos? 🙂 Assistant Director, Stever Bertrand and Youth Services Supervisor, Camille Rose pose proudly in front of their new toy. They used this green screen for projects to post on the teen zone website.
A library made of books Originally uploaded by scampion. Steve Campion posts at Flickr: What could be more obvious than a library made out of books? This is a photo mosaic of the Summit Library, a branch of the Pierce County Library System where I work. It was made using about 1,500 of my LibraryThing book covers. This is the small version; The full image is 18MB and all the covers are clear and readable. Steve this is cool..is the 18MB version online?
Opening Week 027 Originally uploaded by acplyas. Sean Robinson writes: “We have just opened our new library and things are going really well. One of the designs in the new building was the creation of this video gaming area. Katie Jabobs is running this area and came up with many of the design elements. This is proving to be so popular that I am amazed. I am a big fan of libraries developing in this area.”
PLCMC ImaginOn Originally uploaded by Michael Casey. Just one selection from the photos Michael Casey snapped on his recent tour of the Public Library of Charlotte Mecklenburg County.
Via The Blog about Libraries: http://www.mailtribune.com/archive/2007/0123/local/stories/guest_library_column.htm Does my heart good. Except – the libraries where the author works ARE CLOSING! Libraries provide a neutral community gathering place for the free exchange of ideas, culture, and entertainment. Libraries promote a sense of belonging and interpersonal connection in a society that is increasingly “virtual.” 9. A vital and attractive library helps define a community, encourages civic pride, and invests residents with a sense of ownership. 10. Libraries are the heart and soul of a community and reflect the value residents place on literacy, education, […]
