The Librarian in Black writes: I’m pleased to announce that my first book, Technology Training in Libraries, is set to be released in March of this year! This book has been a labor of love for the last year. In it, I walk you through setting up a technology training program in your library, including basic technology training (both online and face-to-face) and general tech training principles and tips. I also address creating and training to a set of “technology skills” expectations for staff members. The bulk of the book walks you through the steps for setting up specific types […]

I did not get a data plan for the Australia trip because CAVAL supplied me with an Internet dongle via Vodaphone. Rick Roche writes: I had several surprises: I expected audiobooks to be a primary interest with the group because we promote iPod books that we circulate from the reference desk. Music, however, was the primary interest of this group. Only a couple had borrowed our iPods for the audiobooks. Several did express interest in the audiobooks once they had heard of them. No one had listened to a podcast. Most had seen the folder on the iTunes software but did not know what it meant. The group was surprised to learn that podcasts are free to download. I had a […]

It will likely also come with enough brains to do cool tricks now with bigger things down the road – like booting your computer from online drive to load the Google operating system. I teach trendspotting in my LIS701 and LIS768 courses. This post is very helpful for understanding the process: http://www.trendwatching.com/trends/top15questions/ How do I become a better trendwatcher? First of all, make sure you acquire a point of view about the world around you. The more trends you spot and track, and the more skilled you are at putting these trends in a context, the more guidance you’ll have. Crucial to broadening your point of view: be curious and be open minded. Not an easy thing to do. We’re all set in our ways, we all have our strict beliefs about what is right and […]
The flurry of excited “Yes I used my laptop for council business and so much more” messages like these has been encouraging. It reminded me that I also need to encourage laptop use in all of my classes for many of the same reasons – especially Saturday/Sunday classes. We’ve seen an increase in student laptop use in our program. This weekend in LIS768, I had 5 Macs and at least that many PCs that students brought in to class. We actually ran out of outlets in the room! Using the tools of the trade if you will – for access […]
