ALA Presentation on Screencasting

I was given the opportunity to be on a panel discussing screencasting for the RUSA MARS Hot Topics Panel at ALA.  The slides will not make much sense in and of themselves, so I am making my  speech notes available as well.  Thanks to everybody who made the long walk to the far corner of  South McCormick Place to watch us. The Tech Static

Sad news, Rachel Singer Gordon’s Tech Static is calling it quits.  Tech Static is/was an outstanding resource for reviews of technology books.  Anybody who has collected Dewey 000s knows just how difficult it is to find credible, reliable, and well written reviews of computer books. This is especially true for those who collect that area but do not have a formal background in technology, like me. I am also disappointed that we let the Tech Static die. Not enough people stepped up when Rachel asked for help. Perhaps you were like me and  had it on your to do list […]

Library Job Searching in a Tough Economy

When I read recently that I had been one of 200 potential candidates for an academic library position I came to the sad realization that, yes, this economy was going to affect my job search tremendously.  As a recent graduate from Dominican University’s LIS program, I’ve been on the hunt for a few months and my techniques for searching have changed quite dramatically.  I used to sample a few sites a couple times a week and browse through the listings in ACRL publications, but recently I’ve refined my attack to be much more effective.  I’d like to share what I’ve […]

KGB Answers your Text Messages

No, it’s not the secret service of the Soviet Union – it is, however, the commercialized reference desk.  KGB, or the knowledge generation bureau as they sometimes call themselves, provides a two-way text reference service straight to mobile devices.  Anywhere.  Anytime. Which begs these questions: What about the reference desk?  Why not ask a librarian? You’ll never hear me say or read that I think the reference desk is dead – because it’s not.  But I will say that we can see in the KBG that there is a niche for text message information resources and they are filling it.  […]

The Start Up Librarian

TTW Contributor and Dominican GSLIS student Kyle Jones writes this month’s NextGen column in LJ: http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6630793.html With the dawn of Library 2.0, a philosophy based on user-centered services and change, new librarians—start-up librarians—are arriving at library directors’ doorsteps by the semester with the same kind of fervor and ability that built today’s great technology companies. Can librarians let go of some of their old, restrictive ways to give these new librarians the kind of environment and support that will drive the profession successfully in the 21st century? Library leaders would do well to observe some characteristics of successful Silicon Valley […]

Fostering Creativity

As a soon-to-be graduate of Dominican’s GSLIS program and in need and want of a new job, I watch the job lists pretty closely.  My interest was piqued quickly as I came across a posting for a “Creativity Library Manager” at the University of Nebrask at Omaha.  Part of the post reads: This newly created position is responsible for developing and operating a unique, experimental library to support creativity in all fields of endeavor. The successful candidate: will identify and select library materials that inspire new ways of thinking; will assist users with materials and extensive, leading-edge technological resources; will […]

Thanks and Happy Holidays

Before Michael puts Tame The Web to rest for the holidays I just wanted to say a quick thank you. You might be asking, “why the thanks?”  Well, to be honest I have to say that spaces like Tame The Web, Twitter, Facebook, and other online networks have connected me with the profession in more ways than I could have ever imagined.  I’ve had some great professional dialogues about the state of librarianship and its future.  I’ve met some wonderful folks and I hope to continue to build these relationships and create even more.  With two classes left at Dominican […]

An Answer. Converged Devices, Barcodes & the Future

On Friday, I asked a question: Made with snapper.net I wanted to see what type of response I might get putting it into the form above. Three events in three weeks lead to this post. This kind of synchronicity always makes my trendspotting radar go off. First, I met some great folks from Pasco Libraries in Florida when I spoke at the TBLC Annual Meeting. They shared with me a promotion for their Battle of the Bands event: the intial announcement was made via a 2D code. Not a flier, not a blog post, not a Facebook alert —  but […]

Lee is at DevLearn08

DevLearn08 staging area, originally uploaded by leeleblanc. TTW Contributor Lee LeBlanc writes: Today is the first day of DevLearn 2008 in San Jose. The elearning theme is not only valuable for someone in my position but this aspect of the changing nature of learning environments is fascinating and one libraries should watch (perhaps even participate in). More updates about this conference later. I’m being very conscious of my time here. I just read a very interesting blog post about how people are attending conferences these days -and not really attending them by being (kinda) un-present. Consumed, was the thought, about […]

Thanks SWFLN!

I gave two presentations last week for the Southwest Florida Library Network.  The slides for “Taming Technolust in a Hyperlinked World” are here. The best part of the time was getting to spend time with Lee LeBlanc, who is a little over a month in his new job at SWFLN: Continuing Education/Emerging Technologies Coordinator. Lee has been a TTW Contributor for almost a year and I’m always glad to hear what he thinks about libraries and our future.
