Measuring the Value and Effect of Learning 2.0 Programs in Libraries

This is from the proposal. It frames what we’ll be investigating: “I believe that this has been one of the most transformational and viral activities to happen globally to libraries in decades.”   Stephen Abram., Stephen’s Lighthouse, February 5, 2008 The genesis of Learning 2.0 began with an article by library futurist Stephen Abram. “Helene Blowers of PLCMC took the article “Things You (or I) Might Want To Do This Year” by SirsiDynix’s Stephen Abram and distilled it down to 23 things that she wanted her staff to understand through hands-on experience,” Hastings noted in a 2007 Library Journal article. Blowers […]

Info Architecture for Libraries – Two Independent Studies

I’m working with two students this semester on individual independent studies. They’ve chosen to chronicle their work via a blog, This is one of the ways we check in and I can see their progress. We also meet for lunch every other week to discuss readings and have some genral chit chat. Purpose This project is being completed as part of an independent study by Kyle Jones and Katharine Johnson, graduate students in Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science.  Kyle wants to investigate more into the field of Information Architecture and develop a background on its influence […]

TTW Mailbox: Flickr Research Down Under

How WE Learn

HeyJude writes: So from the history of the internet to this refocussing on learning – a great interview from Michael Wesch about harnessing collective intelligence rather than teaching content. He is an advocate of ‘anti-teaching’, seeking too inspire with god questions. Google becomes a tool for testing possibilities. Social media is also about learning possibilities. But don’t get it wrong – it is also about more work! more commitment! more active involvement in collaborative learning. He also raises the use of RFID on a campus, for creating learning opportunities. This I like!! “We learn more when we are sharing information…” […]

Measure the Silence

By Michael Casey & Michael Stephens You make every effort to create a transparent library. You listen to your staff and customers and give them all possible means to talk to you-email, blogs, paper comment cards, telephone numbers, instant messaging, etc. You try to listen in via Twitter and Yelp. You hold community nights for customers to talk to you and go out to where they are and try to hold conversations where it is most convenient for them. From all of this, you try to steer your library on the right course, paying heed to and responding to input. […]

My Dissertation Bound

My Dissertation Bound, originally uploaded by mstephens7. I just received three bound copies of my dissertation from ProQuest. For those who might be interested, you can download a PDF version here: stephens-mfinal TTW Contributor Lee LeBlanc provided these links: http://www.scribd.com/doc/6355946/Stephens-Mfinal http://pdfmenot.com/view/https://tametheweb.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/stephens-mfinal.pdf From the conclusion: While Gorman (2005) defined a blog as “a species of interactive electronic diary by means of which the unpublishable, untrammeled by editors or the rules of grammar, can communicate their thoughts via the web,” I believe the biblioblogger’s potential role is one of bibliography. Wilson (1979) wrote: “… a complete bibliographical job involves all four […]

Quote of the Day from Will Richardson

http://weblogg-ed.com/2008/quote-of-the-day-new-knowledge/ From “Collective Intelligence: Creating a Prosperous World at Peace” (600+ page .pdf) comes this passage by Robert Steele in his essay “Creating a Smart Nation:” Published knowledge is old knowledge: The art of intelligence in the 21st Century will be less concerned with integrating old knowledge and more concerned with using published knowledge as a path to exactly the right source or sources that can create new knowledege tailored to a new situation, in real time.” While this is in the context of national security and intelligence, I think it’s applicable to the ways in which we think about networked learning, […]

Second Life Research

This semester I am working with a student at The College of St. Catherine (Dominican has partnered with the school for a few years) on an independent study examining the information needs and information-seeking behaviors of Second Life Users. Check it out: http://librariandreamer.wordpress.com/  I constructed this research project because I desperately want to know more about people who use virtual worlds. Knowing more about the users can help librarians who are experimenting with how to provide library services and information there. Virtual worlds present a unique opportunity for librarians to creatively apply the mandate they have to serve user communities. […]
