Ten Trends & Technologies for 2009

Ten Trends & Technologies for 2009 by Michael Stephens Download a PDF of the post here. Welcome to the 2009 version of TTW’s annual look at the trends and technologies that I believe will impact what we do in libraries and information centers. This post ties in with several presentations I will be giving this spring. I was remiss last year – prepping to take “The Hyperlinked Library” to Australia, I just couldn’t get the 2008 post going. Another reason was many of the same discussions and trends from 2007 had carried over into 2008. If you’re curious, here are […]

Ten Trends & Technologies Tomorrow

I’m gearing up for my Education Institute presentation tomorrow with a presentation and a big blog post. I’ll be speaking to the group via the phone and encourage participants to check in via Twitter as well so we can have some chatter as well. Here are the details: http://www.thepartnership.ca/partnership/bins/calendar_page.asp?cid=85-2304&lang=1 In fact, use this mark so I will be sure to see your messages: #TTWtrends 🙂 The slides are here.

Compact file size: patrons often pay a fee for each byte transmitted […]

Plugged in at The Marriott

Speaking of cisutomer relationships, don’t miss Jenny Levine’s post about her experience at a Marriott hotel: Apparently this is part of a service called Plug into Marriott, and it’s a traveling geek’s dream come true. In fact, I’d love to have one of these in every room in my house! The panel has four surge-protected outlets, an ethernet port, an audio-in port, RCA jacks, an S-Video port, a computer video port, and even a memory card reader. This means you can plug in your laptop (to do work or watch a DVD), an MP3 player to listen to music, a digital […]

Is the Customer the Enemy?

Christopher Carfi writes about Oracle and Oracle’s Social CRM (I had to look it up: stands for Customer Relationship Management.) http://www.socialcustomer.com/2008/09/1000-miles-to-g.html First, the pragmatic bits.  Oracle still has a long way to go to truly embrace the notion that the customer can be in control, or at least be a mutually beneficial party, in the business relationship.  Exhibit A, the cringeworthy tag line and subhead on the page shown above.  What does it say? “Oracle Social CRM Applications leverage Web 2.0 technologies to help sales people identify qualified leads, develop effective sales campaigns and presentations, and collaborate with colleagues to […]

iPhone App Review: Charlie for Flickr

Charlie for Flickr, originally uploaded by mstephens7. When the App store launched, I tried the Flickr apps available – including one or two that I purchased. But recently I’ve been using Charlie, a new app developed by Graham Savage, for my Flickr surfing/commenting. The app is available in the store for $2.99: Disclaimer: I beta tested Charlie for Graham these past few weeks and offered feedback about various features. What Graham created from the get go is a fluid, easily navigated, and usable interface to checkout what’s happening at Flickr. The start screen gives me access to all the […]

Judy Akalaitis, Business Librarian at the Seattle Public Library writes: Hi Michael! I’m trying to find out what public libraries have Firefox as an option on their public computers.  It was suggested that I contact you, as your travels and work may have led you down this path.  If you know iof any libraries or have any ideas or leads, I would love to hear about them. Thank you for your time and consideration. Good question! I would suggest this post: http://www.swissarmylibrarian.net/2008/05/08/using-firefox-on-our-public-computers If you have info or ideas about using Firefox in the public library, please email Judy Akalaitis at Judy.Akalaitis (at) spl.org […]

Assistance with Mac Digital Media Lab?

Bjorn Jones wrote me an email and I thought it would be best to share it withh TTW readers in case someone can help him out. I’m Bjorn.  I just started my first job as a public librarian for the city of Salinas, California. My first day on the job I was assigned the task of launching a new Mac digital arts lab.  Our new Mac computers are loaded with software for creating digital media.  My library’s goal is to connect the community with the media creation tools now available on our new Mac computers. This is a HUGE undertaking that would be a […]
